What Does the Bible Say about Worship?

God Wants Us to Worship Him

All throughout Scripture, we are commanded to worship God. Paul tells us to worship God regularly and to make our lives one big conversation with God. This is God’s purpose and will for us.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” -1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 NIV

Our hearts should be full of thankfulness at all times. We cultivate this by talking about God, singing to Him, reflecting on what He’s done, and making worship a regular part of our lives.

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Worship is important to God. He designed us to be worshipers.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Worship Changes and Heals Us

One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?  Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

I love this story so much! Jesus miraculously healed 10 lepers and only one came back to thank Him. Because of His worship and gratitude, his faith made him well. He was healed not only physically, but also spiritually. Genuine worship begins with faith—choosing to trust God no matter what our circumstances are. Nothing changes our hearts, our perspectives, and our pain quite like gratitude, thanksgiving, and worship.

Our Worship Helps Point Others to God

When people see us praising God, especially during hard times, they notice that there is something different about us. We hope for something bigger than the world. Our worship helps others get curious about Jesus.

Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth.
