During the month of August, we are praying that our kids would be humble. Jesus was humble and gentle in heart and we want our kids (and ourselves) to become more like Jesus each and every day!

Today we want to share some of our favorite resources for growing and developing humility in ourselves as well as in our kids. Click on the photos to learn more and to purchase!

The Big Wide Welcome

by Trillia Newbell

I adore this book! I’ve been reading it with my kids at home and my Sunday School kiddos at church. It’s not technically about humility, but it reminds us to humbly put ourselves in other’s shoes and to remember that we are all God’s kids no matter how different we may seem from one another. This book is a beautifully illustrated study of James 2 and it warns us against favoritism.

“In this book, children will learn that Christians and churches are called to be like Jesus: to give a big, wide welcome to all kinds of people so that they can hear the good news for themselves.”

Gentle and Lowly

by Dane C. Ortlund

This book was recommended to me by a friend who went through a tough season with anger and losing it with her kids. She shared with me that God used this book to really change her and help her seek after the gentle and humble heart of Jesus. I just picked it up from the library last week and haven’t been able to put it down. I’m not done yet, but so far this book has brought me back to the heart of Jesus, has helped me focus on Him, and has motivated me to emulate His humility.

Growth vs. Guilt Podcast Episode

I am a faithful listener of Heather MacFadyen’s Don’t Mom Alone Podcast. It is my absolute favorite parenting podcast. Sometimes an episode sticks with me and changes me as a mom. I listened to this episode with Lisa Bevere years ago, but I will never ever forget what Lisa shared about humility.

She shared on the episode that many people ask her and her husband what they did right in raising their wonderful adult children. The answer that her and her husband give to people made my eyes well up with tears. She said that it wasn't the many things they did right, it was the things they did wrong and the way they handled that. She said they both chose to humbly apologize to their kids whenever they were in the wrong. Their humility made the kids feel safe and reminded them that their parents were human and that they also needed Jesus. Their kids got a front row seat in watching their parents sin and repent and watching God restore them.

Triggers

by Amber Lia and Wendy Speake

We shared this book last month, but thought it would be worth sharing again for humility. Putting ourselves in our kids shoes and serving them even when it’s tough is hard work, but it’s worth it.

Each chapter examines common parenting issues that sometimes can make us act inappropriately at our children (aka yelling and groaning!). But this book moves beyond simple parenting tips on how to change your child’s behavior, instead the authors offer biblical insight and practical tools to equip and encourage you on the journey away from anger-filled reactions toward gentle, biblical responses. After all, the best way to raise humble kiddos is to model humility, empathy, and gentleness.
