We are praying all month that our kids would feel God’s presence. We want them to know God and be known by Him.

Today we want to share some of our favorite resources for growing and developing intimacy with the Lord in our kids. Click on the photos to learn more and to purchase!

Flashlight Night

By Elisabeth Hasselbeck

I absolutely love this book. It is an adorable story that teaches kids that God always hears our prayers and is always present. The story is about a boy whose family uses a chalkboard wall to write down their prayers. Later, the boy’s mom visits the chalkboard wall at dusk with a flashlight. She shines the light on some prayers and turns it off at other times, pointing out that their prayers (and the children's faith) are still there, even in the dark, and that God hears every request.

My kids adore this book and have referenced it many times. It really helps them to understand the abstract concept of God’s presence.

We Wonder Podcast

Contemplative Bible Storytelling for Children & Grownups Alike

We love a good podcast! This is one that we have done with our kids many times. Here is a description from their website:

Plenty of wonderful resources exist to teach children about the Bible. This podcast invites children into an immersive, contemplative experience of the words of Scripture. We make space for their responses and questions, and guide them in a prayerful engagement with the story. And we remember, always, that God is drawing close to us in love as we make space for the Holy Spirit to speak through our sacred text.

We want to invite children into a life of wonder, engagement, and curiosity about the Bible. Children's spiritual lives are real and vibrant: they are known and loved by God as they are right now, not just as grownups in training! That's why, on this podcast, we allow children the space to enter God's good words together, wonder about them, and talk with God about what we find.

Notes from Jesus: What Your New Best Friend Wants you to Know

By Mikal Keefer

I love reading this book with my own kids as well as my students at church. It’s filled with Biblical truth and written as if it were Jesus writing you a personal letter. It helps kids understand the kind of closeness Jesus wants to have with them. It also includes ideas for becoming closer and closer friends with Jesus.

Raising Prayerful Kids Book and Free Downloads

If you have our book, Raising Prayerful Kids, there are some exercises that are designed to help you and your child grow closer to Jesus. Check out Practicing the Presence of God (Chapter 13), Teaching your Kids to Hear God’s Voice (Chapter 17), Breath Prayers (Chapter 18), and Lectio Divina (Chapter 169). Lectio Divina is a great way to teach our kids to pray through the Bible. It helps them understand that the Bible is God’s Word and that He speaks to us through it.
